Pas 24: 2016 Windows and Doors
What is PAS 24: 2016 and how will it benefit me?
PAS stands for Product Assessment Specification and is produced by BSI (British Standards Institute) to provide a method for testing and assessing the enhanced security performance requirements of door sets and window types intended to resist the levels and methods of attack experienced in the UK and normally associated with the casual or opportunist burglar.
It is a means of demonstrating that your property is more secure.
Q: Does Pas 24:2016 apply to me?
A: The current specification is that for any new build or change of use requires the windows and doors need to be Pas 24:2016 certified. This includes a change of use, such as Barn conversions.
Q: Will this affect the style of window or door that I wish to purchase?
A: No, some companies may only offer limited design options but here at Wealden Joinery we can still offer a bespoke design service.
Q: Will a Upvc or Aluminium item have a higher rating compared to timber?
A: No. All items have to go through the same strict testing procedure to receive certification. The difference is that timber is the best natural insulator that you can get which will achieve a better thermal rating.
Q: Is Pas 24:2016 the same as Pas 24:2012 version?
A: No! Pas 24: 2012 is a withdrawn standard that has now been replaced with the Pas 24: 2016 edition. Not every company offering Pas 24:2016 will be manufacturing to the current standard. Here at Wealden joinery we are producing Pas 24: 2016 windows and doors to the highest standard.
Q: Do I need Pas 24:2016 for my replacement windows and doors?
A: No not at the moment. BUT if we can provide you with beautiful replacement windows and doors which meets your asthetic requirements and also meets the new Building Regulations why not? You wouldn’t chose to leave your front door unlocked at night, would you?
Q: Do I need Pas 24:2016 for my new build?
A: Yes Fact! You need to comply with Building Regulations Approved Document Q which Pas 24:2016 currently complies with. Follow this link to see more. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/security-in-dwellings-approved-document-q
Prior to the late 1990’s most replacement Windows & Doors fitted in to new homes were not necessarily designed to be secure and if a manufacturer claimed that they were secure there was no independent testing or minimum standards available to confirm the claim. It was very much left to the householder to judge the claims being made by the manufacturer and to add extra security if necessary.
Quite regularly poor ironmongery would be used to keep costs down to a minimum with little consideration for the security of the household in question. At this time the security was regarded as the householders problem with the builder or designer taking little to no responsibility. often at a later date when this was discovered to be an issue the doors or windows were indeed too thin to be able to house suitable locks and glazing resulting in them needing to be replaced.
As a result the British standard institute along with police and manufacturers decided upon the creation of a series of tests standard of security to windows and doors. this became known as Pas 24 :1999 edition.
Over the years many developments have been made to the testing system to help raise the standard of security giving customers a dependable fully tested product now resulting in Pas 24 : 2016 edition.
